Turn a Discord video into a GIF

Open a Discord video message's Apps menu and choose Image / Video to GIF. See a real export, the steps for personal and server installs, and the limits.

Example output

The source is a 4.3-second clip of a kitten pawing around (by Fumikas Sagisavas, published as CC0 on Wikimedia Commons). Both GIFs are actual FragClip exports, not recordings of Discord.

Free export: a white kitten twists and paws for 2 seconds, with a small fragmingo.app watermark in the corner
Installed for yourself, default (Free): first about 2 seconds, 256×144, with watermark
Pro export: the white kitten paws around and curls up for 4.4 seconds, with the caption NOPE in the lower left and no watermark
Pro export from a server with the caption NOPE: 4.4 seconds (the source is shorter than 5), 480×270, no watermark. The GIF is about 5.5 MB

What you need

  • A video attached to a Discord message: mp4, mov, or webm. Links to videos on other sites are not supported.
  • The source video can be up to 30 seconds on both Free and Pro. The upload size limit depends on the plan.

What you can choose depends on where Fragmingo is installed. If less of the source video is left, the GIF is shorter too.

Installed for yourself

In servers and DMs where Fragmingo is not added, the first private preview starts at the beginning of the video with the default preset. Nothing is posted until you press Post.

Added to a server

Before the preview, you can type a title or caption and choose the Start, Style, Fit, and Layout. In a server that has Fragmingo, this is the flow even if you also installed it for yourself.

Add to a server

Steps

  1. Find the video message

Post a video in a channel, or find a video message that is already there.

  2. Open the Apps menu

Right-click the message on desktop, or long-press it on mobile, then choose Apps > Image / Video to GIF.

  3. Make the preview

    Installed for yourself

The first private preview starts at the beginning of the video with the default preset. If a settings panel appears instead, follow the server steps.

    Added to a server

Optionally type a title or caption (up to 40 characters), choose the Start, Style, Fit, and Layout, then press Preview GIF.

  4. Check it and post

Review the private preview, then press Post or Post reply.

FAQ

Can I choose which part of the video becomes the GIF?

Yes, when Fragmingo is added to a server: pick the Start before the preview, or move the cut with Earlier and Later on the preview. The Start can be the beginning or 1, 2, 3 or 5 seconds in, and the GIF covers up to 5 seconds from there (2 on Free). Where Fragmingo is only installed for yourself, the first preview starts at the beginning of the video; add Fragmingo to a server to choose the start. Either way, use a clip where the moment you want is near the beginning.

Does a preview use my daily count?

A successful preview uses one video GIF from your daily count, or one Pro export. A failed render does not, and posting the same preview does not use another. Making it again with a different start, including Earlier and Later, uses one each time.

Can I use a YouTube or other video link?

No. Only mp4, mov, and webm videos attached in Discord are supported.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. GIFs have no audio. The video is scaled down and converted for GIF automatically.

Daily counts, upload sizes, and Pro options are listed in the plans section of the guide.
